Prayer for the Poor (St. Vincent de Paul)
Lord, help me to make time today
to serve you in those who are most in need of encouragement or assistance.
Grant that I may see you in the poor,
and love you in them,
overcoming my resistance and my disgust,
for it is you whom I serve.
Make me kind and gentle, so that not one of them
shall go away from me the worse for having come.
Give me the grace to bear their moods and their misery,
and to see, beneath the rags,
the person for whom Christ died.
Amen.

About the prayer
St. Vincent de Paul (1581–1660) organised charity for the poor of France on a scale no one had attempted, and taught the Daughters of Charity that the poor were their masters. This prayer, from the Vincentian tradition, is used by those serving in shelters, hospitals, and prisons.
