Prayers of Forgiveness
The Kyrie Eleison (Threefold Plea for Mercy)
The oldest surviving Greek text in the Latin liturgy, attested in Christian worship from at least the fourth century and likely older.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.
Roman Missal / Byzantine Divine Liturgy
About the prayer
Prayed in the Penitential Act at Mass and throughout Eastern services, sometimes dozens of times in succession. Its brevity is the point: mercy is asked for without explanation, argument, or condition.
