Morning Prayer of St. Macarius the Great
The first of the morning prayers in the Orthodox prayer book, attributed to St.
O God, cleanse me, a sinner,
for I have never done anything good in your sight.
Deliver me from the evil one,
and let your will be done in me,
that I may open my unworthy mouth without condemnation
and praise your holy name:
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Rising from sleep I thank you, O Holy Trinity,
because through your great goodness and patience
you were not angered with me, slothful and sinful as I am,
neither have you destroyed me in my transgressions,
but have shown your usual love for mankind,
and raised me up as I lay in heedlessness,
that I might sing my morning hymn and glorify your sovereignty.
Enlighten now the eyes of my understanding,
open my mouth to receive your words,
and teach me your commandments.
Amen.
