A Prayer for Daily Work and Provision
Drawn from the Book of Common Prayer's collect "For Every Man in His Work," this prayer treats ordinary labour as a genuine vocation rather than a necessary evil.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
who declarest thy glory and showest forth thy handiwork
in the heavens and in the earth:
deliver us, we beseech thee, in our several callings,
from the service of self alone,
that we may do the work which thou givest us to do
in truth and beauty and righteousness,
with singleness of heart as thy servants,
and to the benefit of our fellow men;
give us this day our daily bread,
and grant us contentment in what thou providest;
for the sake of him who came among us as one who serves,
thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

About the prayer
The phrase "in our several callings" reflects the Reformation conviction, shared by the monastic tradition before it, that a farmer, a nurse, and a bishop all serve God in the work they are actually given. It is prayed at the start of the working day, before a job interview, during unemployment, or when money is short and worry crowds out trust.
