Night Prayer (Compline)
Compline is the Church's last prayer of the day, prayed by monks before the great silence since at least the sixth century and codified in the Rule of St.
The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.
Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit;
for thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, thou God of truth.
Keep me, O Lord, as the apple of an eye;
hide me under the shadow of thy wings.
Visit this place, O Lord, we pray,
and drive far from it all snares of the enemy;
let thy holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace,
and let thy blessing be upon us evermore;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping,
that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Amen.

About the prayer
Benedict. Its themes are consistent across every tradition that keeps it: the handing over of the day, protection through the night, and a willingness to sleep as a small rehearsal of death and resurrection. The words "into thy hands" are Christ's own from the cross, quoting Psalm 31. Pray it as the last thing before bed, especially when the day has gone badly or the mind will not settle.
