Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon)
These are the words of the aged Simeon in the Temple as he took the infant Jesus in his arms (Luke 2:29-32), having been promised he would not die before seeing the Messiah.
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
for mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Amen.

About the prayer
The Church has prayed it at the close of the day since at least the fourth century; it is the gospel canticle of Compline in the Roman Rite and of Evensong in the Book of Common Prayer. Because it is a prayer of completion and release, it is traditionally used at bedtime, at funerals, and by anyone learning to let go of something they have been holding tightly.
