About the prayer
Padre Pio celebrated Mass daily, and between Masses he would pause repeatedly through the day to make a spiritual communion — a prayer that asks Christ to come into the soul when receiving the Eucharist sacramentally is not possible. His friars recorded that he did this constantly, sometimes dozens of times a day.
The wording is closely related to the older act of spiritual communion of St. Alphonsus Liguori, which Padre Pio knew well; the version here is the form circulated by the Capuchins of San Giovanni Rotondo as the one he used. The library also carries the St. Alphonsus version, and either may be prayed.
It is prayed by the homebound, by the sick, by anyone who cannot get to Mass, and as a brief act of devotion at any moment of the day.
