Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great
O Sacred Heart of Jesus,
fountain of eternal life,
your heart is a glowing furnace of love.
You are my refuge and my sanctuary.
O my adorable and loving Saviour,
consume my heart with that burning fire
with which yours is inflamed.
Pour down on my soul those graces
which flow from your love,
and let my heart be so united with yours
that our wills may be one,
and mine in all things conformed to yours.
May your will be the rule of all my desires and actions. Amen.

About the prayer
St. Gertrude the Great (1256–1302), a Benedictine nun of Helfta, was among the first to receive and record visions of the Sacred Heart, three centuries before the devotion became widespread. Her prayers are still used in Benedictine houses and in Sacred Heart devotion.
