Prayers of the Saints
The Suscipe (Prayer of St. Ignatius)
The Suscipe — Latin for "receive" — comes at the climax of the Spiritual Exercises of St.
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,
all that I have and possess.
Thou hast given all to me.
To thee, O Lord, I return it.
All is thine; dispose of it wholly according to thy will.
Give me only thy love and thy grace;
that is enough for me. Amen.
St. Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises (c. 1524)
About the prayer
Ignatius of Loyola, written between 1522 and 1524, in the Contemplation to Attain Divine Love. Ignatius places it at the very end of a thirty-day retreat, once a person has seen how much they have been given. It is the most complete prayer of surrender in the Western tradition and the signature prayer of the Jesuits. Pray it when you are clinging to control, facing a decision you cannot manage, or wanting to offer God something more than words.
