Prayer of St. Gregory of Narek
Speaking with God from the depths of the heart:
I offer these words of prayer, O God,
not as an offering worthy of you,
but as tears wrung from a heart that has nothing else to give.
You who are compassion itself,
receive the sighing of one who is poor.
You know me as I truly am,
and yet you do not turn away.
Have mercy on me, and by the healing of your grace
make new what has grown old in me,
and gather back what I have scattered.
For you alone can forgive,
and to you belongs glory for ever. Amen.

About the prayer
St. Gregory of Narek (951–1003), an Armenian monk declared a Doctor of the Church in 2015, wrote the Book of Lamentations — ninety-five 'conversations with God from the depths of the heart' that every Armenian household once kept beside the Bible. This prayer follows his manner and language.
