Prayer of Abandonment (Charles de Foucauld)
Charles de Foucauld was a French soldier and explorer who converted dramatically in 1886 and spent the rest of his life as a hermit among the Tuareg people of the Sahara, where he was killed in 1916.
Father, I abandon myself into your hands;
do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you:
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me,
and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, O Lord.
Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you with all the love of my heart,
for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself,
to surrender myself into your hands, without reserve,
and with boundless confidence,
for you are my Father. Amen.

About the prayer
He was canonised in 2022. This prayer, drawn from a meditation he wrote on Christ's last words from the cross, has become one of the best-loved prayers of the twentieth century. It is prayed in illness, in bereavement, before surgery, and by anyone facing a situation they cannot control and must nonetheless walk into.
