Ave Maria (The Hail Mary in Latin)
The first half of the Ave Maria is scripture: the greeting of the angel Gabriel and of Elizabeth in Luke 1.
Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
(Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.)

About the prayer
The second half, the petition, was added gradually in the late Middle Ages and fixed in the Roman Breviary of 1568. The Latin text is the one sung in Gregorian chant, in the settings of Josquin, Palestrina, Schubert, and Gounod, and prayed in Rome and at international gatherings where no common vernacular exists.
