A Latin Marian hymn known from at least the ninth century and sung at Vespers on Marian feasts.
Hail, star of the sea, nurturing Mother of God, and ever Virgin, happy gate of heaven.
Receiving that Ave from the mouth of Gabriel, establish us in peace, transforming the name of Eve.
Loosen the chains of the guilty, bring light to the blind, drive away our evils, ask for all good.
Show thyself a mother; may he receive our prayer through thee, who, born for us, chose to be thine.
O unique Virgin, meek above all, make us, freed from sin, meek and chaste.
Grant a pure life, prepare a safe way, that seeing Jesus, we may rejoice forever.
Praise be to God the Father, glory to Christ the Most High, and to the Holy Spirit; one honor to the Three. Amen.
