The Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary
A devotion of the Servite Order dating to the thirteenth century, formalized as a chaplet by the fifteenth.
(Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys after each sorrow.)
1. The Prophecy of Simeon: Mary, may I share in your sorrow at hearing that a sword would pierce your heart.
2. The Flight into Egypt: Mary, may I share your sorrow at fleeing to save your Child.
3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple: Mary, may I share your sorrow in searching for your Son.
4. Mary Meets Jesus Carrying the Cross: Mary, may I share your sorrow in meeting your Son on the way of the cross.
5. Jesus Dies on the Cross: Mary, may I share your sorrow in standing beneath the cross.
6. Mary Receives the Body of Jesus: Mary, may I share your sorrow in holding your Son's lifeless body.
7. Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb: Mary, may I share your sorrow in laying your Son in the tomb.
Closing: V. Pray for us, most sorrowful Virgin. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

About the prayer
It is prayed especially during Lent and on the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15). It is often used by people who are grieving, because it accompanies a mother through the worst thing that can happen to one.
