The evening collect of the Book of Common Prayer, drawn from the ancient Gelasian Sacramentary.
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord;
and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

About the prayer
Written in an age when night meant real danger, it survives because darkness still means something to those who lie awake in it. Traditionally the last prayer said before sleep in Anglican households.
