Lord, watch over Philip today,
or he will betray you.
Lord, beware of me,
for I shall certainly betray you
unless you hold me fast.
Let me get through today,
and I shall not fear tomorrow.
Jesus, be to me a Jesus,
and save me.
Amen.

St. Philip Neri, the sixteenth-century 'Apostle of Rome', prayed some version of this every morning; his biographers record the words as his habitual plea. It is the shortest antidote in the tradition to spiritual self-confidence.
