Prayer for the Holy Father
Praying for the bishop of Rome is an ancient obligation of Catholic devotion; the versicle is drawn from Psalm 41 and the collect is the Oratio pro Papa of the Roman Missal.
V. Let us pray for our Pontiff.
R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life,
and make him blessed upon the earth,
and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.
Let us pray.
Almighty and everlasting God,
have mercy upon thy servant our Pope,
and direct him, according to thy loving kindness,
in the way of eternal salvation;
that, of thy gift, he may ever desire that which is pleasing unto thee
and may accomplish it with all his strength.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

About the prayer
It has traditionally been prayed as one of the conditions for gaining a plenary indulgence, alongside Confession and Communion, and is often added to the Rosary or to Benediction.
