Prayer of St. Hildegard of Bingen
O Holy Spirit, fire of life,
you are the root of all created being,
the cleanser of all impurity,
the wiper away of all sin,
the eye-salve of our darkness.
You are the breath that gives life to the greenness of the world,
the moisture in the furrow,
the strength in the seed.
Kindle us as you kindled the apostles,
that we may burn and not be consumed,
and go out into the world greening with your life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

About the prayer
St. Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179), abbess, composer, and Doctor of the Church, called the life of God viriditas — 'greenness'. This prayer draws on her antiphons and visions of the Spirit as fire and living moisture.
