Prayer of the Desert Fathers
The Sayings of the Desert Fathers record that when Abba Macarius was asked how to pray, he taught these few sentences and warned against many words.
Lord, as you will and as you know,
have mercy on me.
Lord, help me, for I am weak
and cannot help myself.
Lord, save me, for I am your creature,
and apart from you I perish.
Not many words, but few and often,
with a heart that does not wander;
for God does not need our speeches,
but our attention. Amen.
