Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) opened his sermons at the Metropolitan Tabernacle with short prayers like this, taken down by stenographers and printed with the sermons.
Blessed Spirit of God, come and rest upon us now.
We are dull; quicken us.
We are cold; warm us.
We are wandering; gather our thoughts to one point,
and let that point be Christ himself.
Take of the things of Christ and show them unto us.
Reveal to us our need, and reveal to us the fullness that is in him.
Do not let us go away from this place unblessed,
but write the Word upon our hearts,
that we may not be hearers only but doers,
to the praise of the glory of his grace. Amen.
