The opening and the versicle used at each of the fourteen Stations of the Cross, a devotion carried from Jerusalem to Europe by the Franciscans in the fourteenth century.
Lord Jesus Christ,
you took upon yourself the burden of our sin
and carried your cross to Calvary for our sake.
As I walk this way with you,
grant me a share in your sorrow,
a horror of the sin that put you there,
and a love that will not turn aside.
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Grant that walking these stations
I may not merely remember your Passion,
but be conformed to it,
and follow you at last to the joy of your resurrection.
Amen.
