The Common Table Prayer
The best-known table grace in Lutheran and wider German-American Protestant households, appearing in print by the eighteenth century and passed down mostly by memory rather than by book.
Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest,
and let these gifts to us be blessed. Amen.
Traditional Lutheran table grace (Komm, Herr Jesu)
About the prayer
Its brevity is the point: it can be taught to a three-year-old and still said honestly at ninety.
