Grace Before Meals
The Benedicite table blessing is one of the most widely prayed Christian prayers in the world, said before meals in Catholic homes for many centuries and found in the Roman Ritual.
Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts,
which we are about to receive from thy bounty,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
And after the meal:
We give thee thanks, almighty God,
for all thy benefits,
who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.

About the prayer
Grace at meals goes back to Jewish practice and to Christ himself, who blessed and broke bread at every significant moment of the gospels. The prayer is short by design, so that a family with hungry children can actually pray it. It roots the ordinary act of eating in gratitude and in the memory that nothing on the table was self-generated.
