Prayer to Mary, Help of Christians (St. John Bosco)
O Mary, powerful Virgin,
you are the great and glorious protector of the Church;
you are the marvelous help of Christians;
you are awe-inspiring as an army in battle array;
you alone have destroyed every heresy in the whole world.
In the midst of our anguish, our struggle, and our distress,
defend us from the power of the enemy,
and at the hour of our death receive our souls into paradise.
Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us. Amen.
St. John Bosco / Salesian tradition
About the prayer
St. John Bosco (1815-1888), who spent his life among the poor boys of Turin, made Mary Help of Christians the patroness of his Salesian work and built a great basilica in her honor. The title itself is older — it appears in the Litany of Loreto and was added to the Church's calendar by Pope Pius VII in 1815 in thanksgiving for his release from Napoleon's captivity. Don Bosco taught his boys this short prayer for times of fear.
