A Prayer for the Sick
This is the classic prayer for the sick from the Book of Common Prayer's Ministration to the Sick, in use since 1549 and shaped by much older Latin collects for the infirm.
O Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
our only help in time of need:
we humbly beseech thee to behold, visit, and relieve
thy sick servant for whom our prayers are desired.
Look upon him with the eyes of thy mercy;
comfort him with a sense of thy goodness;
preserve him from the temptations of the enemy;
give him patience under his affliction;
and, in thy good time, restore him to health,
and enable him to lead the residue of his life in thy fear and to thy glory.
And grant that finally he may dwell with thee in life everlasting;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

About the prayer
Its realism is notable: it asks for healing, but also for patience, protection from despair, and, if healing does not come, for eternal life. Priests and ministers have prayed it at bedsides for nearly five centuries. It is prayed over the seriously ill, before surgery, and by those keeping vigil with someone who is suffering.
