Prayers for Mental Health
St. Teresa's Bookmark (Let Nothing Disturb You)
These lines were found written on a bookmark in the breviary of St.
Let nothing disturb you,
let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing away;
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices. Amen.
St. Teresa of Ávila (d. 1582), found in her breviary
About the prayer
Teresa of Ávila after her death in 1582. Teresa was a Carmelite reformer who lived with chronic illness, opposition from church authorities, and years of dryness in prayer, and these nine lines distil what she learned. They are among the most quoted words in Christian spirituality, set to music by the Taizé community as "Nada te turbe." Pray them slowly when anxiety is spiralling: each line removes one more thing from the pile you are carrying.
