Prayers for Mental Health
The Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace. Amen.
Reinhold Niebuhr
About the prayer
Written by theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in the 1930s and adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous, this short prayer has probably done more practical good for anxious and struggling people than any other modern prayer. Its power is in the third line: most suffering comes from confusing what we control with what we do not.
