Psalm 130 — Out of the Depths (De Profundis)
The De Profundis is one of the seven Penitential Psalms and has been prayed for the dead and by the desperate since the earliest centuries of the Church.
Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications.
If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities,
O Lord, who shall stand?
But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait,
and in his word do I hope.
My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning:
I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
Let Israel hope in the Lord:
for with the Lord there is mercy,
and with him is plenteous redemption. Amen.

About the prayer
Luther called it a Pauline psalm and based the hymn "Aus tiefer Not" on it; Bach, Mozart, and Arvo Pärt all set it to music. Its most striking image is of a person waiting through the night more intently than a watchman waits for dawn. It is prayed by those caught in addiction, shame, or despair — anyone who needs to say that they are at the bottom and that mercy, not merit, is what they are counting on.
