Prayer to Be Freed from Evil Habits
A prayer for habitual sin, the ordinary battleground of the Christian life and, in Catholic teaching, the most common way a person hands the enemy a foothold.
Lord Jesus Christ, You know the habit that holds me. I have fought it and lost; I bring it to You.
Break its power over my body and my will. Take from me the pleasure I have found in it, and give me instead a taste for what is good. Where the habit has worn a path in me, cut a new one.
I renounce every spirit that feeds upon this weakness, and I ask You to send it to the foot of Your Cross. Fill what it leaves empty with Your Holy Spirit.
Give me the grace of this day only, and tomorrow give me the grace of that day. Amen.

About the prayer
St. Augustine described in the Confessions how repeated consent hardens into necessity: "my will was in the enemy's power, and from it he had made a chain for me." The prayer therefore asks for two things at once — the breaking of the chain and the forming of a new habit of virtue — and asks for grace one day at a time, in the spirit of Matthew 6:34.
