Blessing of Throats on the Feast of St. Blaise
Through the intercession of Saint Blaise,
bishop and martyr,
may God deliver you from every disease of the throat
and from every other illness,
in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Let us pray.
O God, deliver us through the intercession
of your holy bishop and martyr Blaise
from all evil of soul and body,
especially from all ills of the throat;
and grant us the grace to make a good confession
in the confident hope of obtaining your pardon,
and ever to praise with worthy lips
your most holy name.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

About the prayer
St. Blaise was a bishop of Sebaste in Armenia martyred around 316; tradition holds that on his way to execution he healed a boy choking on a fishbone. On his feast, 3 February, Catholics receive this blessing with two candles crossed and held to the throat, a rite included in the Book of Blessings. It is one of the most familiar of the Church's blessings for bodily health.
