Prayer Before the Study of Scripture (John Calvin)
John Calvin closed each of his lectures on scripture with a short extempore prayer, and the prayers were taken down by his hearers and printed.
Grant, Almighty God,
that as you have not only once shone upon us by your Word,
but continue to set it before us daily,
we may not be deaf or careless hearers,
but with true reverence receive what you teach us,
and give ourselves wholly to your service.
Open our eyes that we may behold wondrous things out of your law;
give us understanding, that we may keep it with our whole heart;
and grant that what we learn we may not merely know,
but live;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
