Prayer for the Vision of God (St. Bede the Venerable)
The closing sentence of Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed at Jarrow in 731 — the prayer with which the first historian of the English Church ended his life's work.
And I pray thee, good Jesus,
that as thou hast graciously granted me
sweetly to drink in the words of thy knowledge,
so thou wouldst also of thy goodness grant me
one day to come to thee, the fountain of all wisdom,
and to stand for ever before thy face.
