The Nine First Fridays devotion comes from the revelations of the Sacred Heart to St.

O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore Thee, I love Thee, and with a lively sorrow for my sins I offer Thee this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure, and wholly obedient to Thy will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in Thee and for Thee. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Thy blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen. THE PRACTICE 1. On the first Friday of nine consecutive months, receive Holy Communion in a state of grace. 2. Go to confession beforehand if needed, near the day. 3. Offer each Communion in reparation for the sins by which the Heart of Jesus is wounded — indifference, sacrilege, and ingratitude. 4. Keep a short time of thanksgiving after Communion, and if you can, an hour before the Blessed Sacrament. 5. If a month is missed, begin the nine again — the devotion is a school of perseverance, not a countdown.

About the prayer

Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun at Paray-le-Monial in France, between 1673 and 1675. Among the promises recorded by her and her spiritual director, St. Claude de la Colombiere, is the "Great Promise": that those who receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of nine consecutive months will not die without the grace of final repentance. The Church permits the devotion but has always read that promise within ordinary Catholic teaching — it is not a guarantee that removes the need for a converted life, and presuming on it would empty it of meaning. The devotion took its present shape in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and Pope Pius IX extended the Feast of the Sacred Heart to the universal Church in 1856. Its heart is reparation: making up in love for the coldness with which Christ's love is met.
