Prayers of the Saints
Prayer for a Happy Death to St. Joseph
Christian tradition holds that St.
O blessed Joseph,
who died in the arms of Jesus and Mary,
obtain for me, I beseech you,
the grace of a happy death.
In that hour of dread and anguish,
assist me by your presence
and protect me by your power
against the enemies of my salvation.
Into your sacred hands, living and dying,
Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I commend my soul. Amen.

About the prayer
Joseph died at Nazareth attended by Jesus and Mary, which is why he has been honored for centuries as the patron of a happy death. Confraternities devoted to this intention spread across Europe from the sixteenth century onward, and this prayer became a staple of Catholic prayer books. It is prayed by the aging, by the sick, by those keeping vigil at a deathbed, and by anyone who wishes to prepare in peace for their final hour.
