Prayers for Healing
A Prayer for Doctors, Nurses, and Caregivers
A contemporary prayer for healthcare workers, drawing on the ancient title of Christus Medicus — Christ the Physician — used by the Church Fathers.
Lord Jesus, physician of soul and body, bless those who care for the sick.
Give them clear minds at the end of long shifts and compassion that does not wear out.
Guide their hands and their judgment.
Where they must give bad news, give them gentleness. Where they lose a patient, give them peace.
Guard them from bitterness and burnout, and let them see your face in everyone they treat. Amen.
Contemporary prayer in the Christus Medicus tradition
About the prayer
St. Luke the Evangelist, a physician, and Sts. Cosmas and Damian are the traditional patrons of medicine.
