Novena to St. Jude, Patron of Hopeless Cases
Most holy Apostle, St. Jude,
faithful servant and friend of Jesus,
the Church honours and invokes you universally
as the patron of hopeless cases and of things almost despaired of.
Pray for me, who am so miserable.
Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you
to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of.
Come to my assistance in this great need,
that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven
in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings,
particularly (here make your request),
and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever.
I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour,
to always honour you as my special and powerful patron,
and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen.
Pray for nine consecutive days, adding:
Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...
Traditional novena to St. Jude Thaddeus
About the prayer
St. Jude Thaddeus was one of the twelve apostles, and because his name was so close to that of Judas Iscariot, Christians for centuries hesitated to invoke him — which, tradition says, is why he became especially eager to help those who turn to him. Devotion to him as patron of desperate cases grew in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and spread widely through the Claretian shrine in Chicago in the 1920s. This nine-day novena is prayed when a situation looks finished: an illness with no prognosis, a marriage that seems over, an addiction no one can break. It is a prayer of stubborn hope.
