About the prayer
Known as St. Anthony's Brief, this short formula is attributed to St. Anthony of Padua, who is said to have written it out for a woman tormented by the devil and told her to carry it with her. It became one of the most widely copied protective inscriptions of the Middle Ages, often worn or set above doorways. Its two lines are pure Scripture: the triumph of the Cross, and the acclamation of Revelation 5:5, where the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered.
