The Daily Rosary — Devotional Practice

The Rosary as a daily rule of life, rather than a single prayer, is one of the oldest lay devotions in the Western Church.

Queen of the most holy Rosary, pray for us. THE DAILY PRACTICE 1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross and the Apostles' Creed. 2. Our Father; three Hail Marys for faith, hope, and charity; Glory Be. 3. Announce the first mystery, then pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and a Glory Be, with the Fatima Prayer. 4. Repeat for five mysteries. 5. Close with the Hail Holy Queen and the concluding prayer. THE MYSTERIES BY DAY Monday and Saturday — The Joyful Mysteries Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Finding in the Temple. Tuesday and Friday — The Sorrowful Mysteries Agony in the Garden, Scourging, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, Crucifixion. Wednesday and Sunday — The Glorious Mysteries Resurrection, Ascension, Descent of the Holy Spirit, Assumption, Coronation of Mary. Thursday — The Luminous Mysteries Baptism in the Jordan, Wedding at Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, Transfiguration, Institution of the Eucharist. KEEPING IT DAILY Fix a time rather than waiting for a free moment — driving, walking, before bed. If five decades is too much to begin with, pray one decade faithfully. The Rosary is a meditation on the life of Christ held in the hands; the words carry you while the mind rests on the mystery.

About the prayer

It grew from the medieval practice of praying one hundred and fifty Hail Marys in place of the hundred and fifty psalms of the monastic office — a "psalter of Mary" for those who could not read. Dominican tradition attributes its spread to St. Dominic in the thirteenth century, and Blessed Alan de la Roche organized the first Rosary confraternities in the fifteenth. Pope St. Pius V fixed the present form in 1569 and instituted the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary after Lepanto in 1571. Pope Leo XIII, called the Rosary Pope, wrote twelve encyclicals urging its daily recitation. In 2002 Pope St. John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries in Rosarium Virginis Mariae, filling the gap between Christ's childhood and His Passion. Its power lies in repetition: the vocal prayer becomes a rhythm beneath which the mind contemplates the Gospel.
