Prayers for Mental Health
Prayer for the Grace of Chastity
The opening lines come from an ancient Latin collect for the sick and for charity, long used in the Roman liturgy and rendered into English in older public-domain missals and prayer books.
O God, who by the grace of the Holy Spirit
have poured the gift of charity
into the hearts of your faithful,
grant unto your servants,
for whom I humbly beseech you,
health of mind and body,
that they may love you with their whole strength,
and with perfect affection
accomplish those things which are pleasing to you.
Deliver me, O Lord,
from the temptations of the flesh;
strengthen my will against every unlawful desire;
and make my body a temple of the Holy Spirit,
holy and pleasing in your sight.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Traditional; adapted from an ancient Latin collect
About the prayer
The petitions that follow draw on St. Paul's teaching that the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Prayed together, they ask not merely for restraint but for a rightly ordered love — which is how the Christian tradition has always understood chastity.
