Prayer to Overcome Evil Passions and to Become a Saint
A prayer that turns the whole logic of deliverance toward its proper end.
Lord Jesus Christ, I do not ask merely to be rid of my sins; I ask to become a saint.
Take my anger and make it zeal. Take my fear and make it reverence. Take my desire and make it love. Take my stubbornness and make it perseverance. Take everything in me that the enemy has twisted and straighten it for Your service.
Give me a hatred of sin and a hunger for holiness. Let me not be satisfied with escaping evil, but let me pursue the good with my whole heart, until Christ is formed in me.
Mary, Mirror of Justice, form me. Amen.

About the prayer
The Christian tradition has always taught that the passions are not evil in themselves but disordered, and that grace does not destroy them but heals and reorders them — a principle St. Thomas Aquinas states plainly in the Summa Theologiae. Hence the prayer asks not for removal but for transformation. Its closing petition, "until Christ is formed in me," is St. Paul's phrase to the Galatians (4:19).
