Prayers of Protection
St. Patrick's Breastplate
Known as the Lorica, or breastplate, this prayer is traditionally attributed to St.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
I bind unto myself today
the strong name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One and One in Three. Amen.

About the prayer
Patrick in the fifth century, though the text as we have it comes from an eighth-century Irish manuscript. A lorica was a form of Celtic prayer that wrapped the one praying in God's protection, limb by limb and hour by hour. Legend says Patrick prayed it as he and his companions travelled to confront the high king at Tara. It is prayed on rising, before a difficult day, or whenever you need to feel surrounded rather than exposed.
